Wedding DJ’s – come prepared!

 

My DJ career started when I was 16 years old. Mum and dad used to drive me to the venues, help me set up and then go out for a meal, picking me up on their way home. Admittedly, I didn’t have much equipment but what do you expect when you’re only paying £45 for a disco?!

My set up consisted of a dual turntable deck with built in amplifier accompanied by 2 speakers, x2 3ft square light boxes and 2 traffic light tri-spots. Looking back, it would hardly light up a garden shed, let alone some of the incredible venues in which we are so lucky to work these days.

 

Nearly 25 years on, I am pleased to say that my equipment has improved along with my levels of preparation. By this, I am not just talking about researching the client’s needs or the venue specifics but equally as important, making sure I have suitable back up for all eventualities. A while ago I invested £500 in a 1000 watt speaker amplifier which I hoped I would never have to use because nothing can be more embarrassing than your main PA blowing up halfway through the night. Well, it happened to me on Saturday night!

There was a slight gap in the music whilst I changed to my back up PA but within 10 minutes the music was playing and the dance floor was busy again. This happened at around 11:45pm so the majority of the party goers at Graham’s 60th Birthday Party had taken on board plenty of ‘fluids’ and wanted to party hard into the night – which they did do because I came prepared.

 

Many DJ’s take it for granted that their equipment is fail safe but we don’t take that approach at the Live Events Group, there is too much at stake. When making a decision about who you hire for your private celebration, you’ll want to make sure that your DJ is prepared, carries back ups and can provide the reassurance you need just in case anything like this should happen because you never know!
