Wedding Disco – Top Tips When Choosing Entertainment

In May 2012, the Live Events Group were asked by Wedding Ideas Magazine if we could provide some useful tips for their readers. They asked us to compile 10 helpful hints for couples who may be looking to have a disco at their wedding.

With only enough room in the article for 10 tips, we’ve got loads of pointers that we couldn’t squeeze into the list so if you’d like some assistance choosing your wedding entertainment contact us and we’ll be very happy to offer some free advice.

Top Tips When Choosing Your Wedding Disco

1. Don’t feel obliged to use the ‘in-house’ disco. Some venues offer this in their package but that doesn’t necessarily mean they’re the best DJ for the job. Shop around!

2. Look for recommendations, or maybe phone a past client. Check the DJ’s website if they have one, if it looks unprofessional, chances are, their performance could be unprofessional too.

3. Arrange a meeting with the DJ before booking them and again before your wedding day. As well as gauging their appearance, you’ll be able to see if you ‘get on’.

4. Ask the DJ for their advice on timings: when to have the first dance / buffet etc. and remember you’ll need to allow approximately 90 minutes for the disco to set-up.

5. Music: tell them what you DO want but just as importantly what you DON’T want. Try to avoid being ‘too cool for school’ remember it’s a party for guests too!

6. The best wedding DJs are booked well in advance so make sure you check availability and book early – don’t leave it until the last minute.

7. When asking for a quote, provide as much detail as possible. Dates, times, location are obvious but are you having a theme? What about wireless microphones for speeches? Special lights?

8. Use your budget wisely. Good wedding DJs may cost a little extra but will make the entertainment more memorable than expensive Favours or posh seat covers.

9. Any reputable company will have T&Cs and request you sign an agreement. Make sure you read them! These often contain important information about payment terms, deposits and cancellation policies.

10. How about I use my mp3 player instead? Be careful! How would you deliver the sound? What about requests? A DJ can respond to the crowd and ‘read’ the room.
